What is ISO 9001?
In order for organizations (businesses, etc.) to fully meet customer needs, they must have information concerning needs (input) and reflect such input in the products or services they provide (output). At ISO this conversion from input to output is known as the “Process.” To respond to constantly changing customer needs, the process must be subject to ongoing revision and improvement, a system known as quality management. ISO 9001 prescribes requirements for quality management systems. These requirements are described in general terms to facilitate their application to any category of business or organization.
Based on BS 5750, developed in the U.K. during World War II, ISO 9001 strongly reflects Western thinking and practice. As such, it is highly systematic in nature, emphasizing a preliminary, followed by preparation of guides/manuals and finally, verification. It demands documentation, transparency and performance audits. Furthermore, the assessment/registration system is a voluntary system under which a third party, guided by the ISO standard, assesses and then issues a report about a given company/organization’s quality management system. At present, over 100 countries around the world have adopted ISO 9001 as a national standard, and some 400,000 organizations from 140 countries have been accredited.
Why is the interest in ISO 9001 so high? Because it is an international standard, recognized worldwide, that provides companies, partners and customers a universal yardstick by which to measure the quality management system of a given company/organization. Assessment/registration and examiner training bodies in Japan are subject to authorization by the Japan Accreditation Board for Conformity Assessment (JAB). In examining such bodies and issuing certificates, the JAB uses a standard derived from the generally accepted international paradigm. In Japan there are over 50 assessment/registration and examiner training organizations, domestic and international. |
