Fruit Kingdom – Fukushima
City Fukushima City in Fukushima Prefecture extends from the foot of Mt. Azuma, home to the legendary “Snow Rabbit.” Known as one of the foremost production centers for peaches in Japan, the city also boasts a rich harvest of other seasonal fruit, such as apples and pears. Its famed Hanami-yama Hill, once admired by the late Shotaro Akiyama (a celebrated photographer) as the “Earthly Paradise,” comes alive with numerous visitors who come to appreciate seasonal flowers and blossoms.

Higashi-Kawaguchi is located in the southern part of Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture. Terraced rice paddies extending along the plains at the confluence of Shinano and Uono rivers are an impressive scenic attraction unique to this area. On a hill overlooking downtown is “Sokyu-no-mori Park” complete with accommodation and hot-spring bathing facilities. Another tourist attraction is the “Yanaba” weir, which retains a form of traditional river fishing and attracts some 300,000 tourists annually.
